Our lessons cover five Guardians of Ancestral Lactation from Mesoamerica, Chalchiuhtlicue, Mayahuel, Xochiquetzal, Mictecacihuatl and Tlazolteotl as documented in the Borgia Group Codices and other 16th Century primary sources and interpreted byTecpaxochitl Mireya Gonzalez. Tecpaxochitl takes an interdisciplinary approach to interpreting the codices and integrating information from the social sciences, lactation, and anecdotal narratives. Tecpaxochitl created Guardians of Ancestral Lactation, a traditional care model and decolonial approach to provide peer-based lactation care in the community setting. Through her Guardians of Lactation framework, she models how to integrate Mesoamerican and Indigenous oral tradition and cultural teachings into lactation care and counseling. The Guardians of Ancestral Lactation lesson series is for anyone serving Indigenous-identifying, Chicanx, Hispanic, and Latinx communities who are seeking to restore ancestral and cultural attachments to birth, lactation, and parenting.
